Actually, GABA does help me. It seems to help with GI issues, sleep. If I take it too many nights in a row, there is some depression, however.
Interestingly, GABA supplementation can significantly increase gut butyrate production. Butyrate (like valproate) is an HDAC inhibitor with mood stabilizing properties. Although GABA doesn't pass the BBB too well, butyrate does. Gaba is also helpful for my cardiac anxiety. GABA circulates peripherally and can slow heart rate and blood pressure.
