There are none of those things in the oil, as far as I know. The processing of soya beans to extract the oil would simply leave those things behind. After extraction, the oil is further refined to remove even the lecithin and other lipid-type stuff. Isoflavones and proteins would be long gone before the oil is packaged for market.

Olive oil is good, no matter how it's processed, IMHO.

So, what is the effect, exactly? I'm quite possibly celiac, and I was strongly considering using soy milk (my sister finds it very stabilizing for her body, e.g. no more PMS, more stable mood in general).

> Back when soy beans were all the flavour, I used to make my own soy milk, tofu etc,. reckon I overdid it. It may be part of the cause of going hypo..or throwing something out of whack.

All things in moderation, eh?

> I've dug out for some references , if you are interested..but I think you have probably heard it all before?

Don't count on it.

That's why I so often include references, myself.

> I think ALL of the posters on the hypothyroid forum, have found they feel less hypo with the elimination of soy..and all who have tried an elimination diet and retested a month later, have responded with hypo symptoms..at least that I have read. They were all female I think.

There's certainly an endocrine effect of soya isoflavones. The gender thing makes a lot of sense, given the predominately estrogenic binding capacity.

> I think soy is a goitrogen, but it has other effects on thyroid hormone utilization(unsure what) besides the actual thyroid hormone production.

I saw that in your second post to this series. I didn't know about the iodine-binding effect. Now, I'm a saltaholic, so I doubt that particular effect would matter much to me. (Aside: salt cravings are often a sign of adrenal insufficiency, which I'm pretty darn sure I've got.) I'm not sure if the estrogenic effects would be good or bad *for me*. I'll have to get back to the thyroid/soya thingie later. I'm only home one day, and back on the road in a few hours.

I wonder how this impacts the oriental populations which consume so much soy?
