Acupuncture

Posted by CareBear04 on November 28, 2004, at 16:47:02

hi all,
this is my first time visiting this board, and i haven't had a chance to search to see if my topic has already been covered. if it has, forgive me for the repetition, and if you could respond anyway, i'd really appreciate it.

i'm ready to try acupuncture, but i don't know how to find a good acupuncture practitioner. my insurance actually covers the treatments at 90%, so that's really good. i found several MDs who practice acupuncture, but i don't know if the medical degree makes a difference or not. when i looked up acupuncturists in my area, i found hundreds, so i don't know how to choose. do you think it's better to go with someone who, by ethnicity or background, are more familiar with oriental treatments? are those practitioners harder to communicate with language-wise? do you think that acupuncturists who practice in a group are a better bet than those who practice alone?

as for acupuncture itself, has anyone ever tried it? is it painful? when i looked at the list of medical conditions that it can help, i found a lot that i'm dealing with-- circulation problems, vertigo, lightheadedness, slow digestion, nausea, and pain related to bones and joints. here's another question i'm curious about-- do you have to get undressed to be treated? for these conditions, where would the needles be placed?

if anyone has any experiences, i hope you'll post. i'm nervous about branching out into alternative medicine, but since normal western medicine hasn't helped much, i think it's a reasonable time to try. also, i've been on narcotic painkillers for awhile, and i want to get off them before i become more dependent or even addicted.

thanks!
