Hi Janejane-
I did see that PEA conversation--it was very interesting, and inspired me to give PEA a shot, which I'm surprised to find you can actually buy, these days (wasn't always the case, in my experience).
As for what DLPA does for me, well, it seems, on a dose of 750-1500 mg, to brighten my mood slightly, and give me an odd, not-unpleasant bright and fuzzy feeling in my head (that's the best I can describe it, though it's not pronounced). Never had any problems with mood crashing, but I use it somewhat sparingly. It seems to be a positive, but fairly mild, effect, which lasts for several hours (say, 3, perhaps, before fading gradually).
As for PEA, it's been a while since I researched it, but I remember there being ample reason to think it might be helpful, regardless of whether it messes with endorphins or dopamine, or whatever. To my way of thinking, the chemical systems are all indirect ways of activating cognitive circuitry anyway, and somewhat broad and crude, as well. I mean, the specifics vary a great deal between dopaminergic drugs--a D2/D3 agonist has a very different effect than a DRI, for instance.
I have taken Mucuna pruriens, but not in large quantities--I mean, mucuna pruriens supplements contain L-Dopa, right? That (l-dopa) doesn't seem like something one would want to mess around with unless it were absolutely necessary.
But yeah, anyway--no very specific theorizing--I don't have time to put dozens of hours into the research anymore, so I just try to learn from others and occasionally experiment with something like DLPA or PEA that seems promising.
Best,
PB> I looked into it a little bit a while back, but I don't remember reading anything about cancer, just hypertension. (I might not have been as thorough as you, though.) There was a somewhat recent discussion (earlier this year) about PEA. I'm not sure the risks were discussed much, but you may want to take a look at it anyway. A poster named uncouth had good luck with it, albeit on rather large doses. I believe it has a short half life.

The first couple of times I tried it (conservative doses) not much seemed to happen, and then I took some on a particularly bad PMS day and my mood plummeted even more, perhaps because the extra dopamine ended up depleting my already low serotonin levels. Haven't touched it since then, though I've wondered about DPA or PEA (as a way to boost endorphins without the messing with dopamine/serotonin as much).
