Orthomolecular for the mentally ill dates back to the 50s. Back then, it was Mega-Vitamin Therapy for The Schizophrenias (note the plural).
high dose c, b-complex, b3, e, usually zinc, selenium, fish oil, now and then beta carotene, plus (these days...) carefully selected and dosed pharmaceuticals. back in the day, especially in the very early days of Dr.Abaram Hoffer's work, it was common to use the vitamins+shock, or vitamins+shock+tranquilizers, in more severe cases.
Linus Pauling coined the term Orthomolecular. Pauling, of course, was all about vitamin C, mostly for prevention of cancer and heart problems. I think his daily dosage was 18 grams.
