I know that I share your Approval Addiction, although I've never heard it called that. It depends on the situation, but I can feel myself kinda fold up into this tiny, worried, timid creature at times, wanting approval more than anything. That's one of the top subjects in therapy for me.
On the other hand, I have never found any references to CBT being useful for AN -- the opposite, in fact. A fair number of studies have shown that CBT is not helpful for it -- although it is good for bulimia -- and I've found that it can make things worse for me. AN is all about suppressing feelings, and CBT techniques are way too close to the way I already do that. That makes CBT increase my symptoms, which ain't what we want, eh?
Congrats to your partner on her improvements. In the time since I wrote that, some things are better for me. I'm not necessarily the poster child for motivation, but I am eating better and finally found a therapist who's working out well for me.
