What you have been describing about your T. raises a red flag for me. Ideally, they are supposed to act natural, warm and accepting, but kind of low-key, so that, when you go in to their offices, your feelings and thoughts are always the central topic. I have not had the experience of feeling that my T. is self-conscious, embarrassed, manipulative, or in need of having attention focussed on him. Of course, he's human, and his moods are undoubtedly not always the same, but they are not obvious at all. What is often obvious (and very helpful) are his emotional and topical responses to my ongoing attempts at free association (he's a psychoanalyst). Have you been thinking of interviewing other therapists to see if you can find one who's calmer and more focussed on you?
