many unmedicated conditions can cause irrational and abusive behaviours. The scenario you describe is not unfamiliar to me but i cannot elaborate on that. Rapid and dramatic mood changes are signatures of several conditions. The sad thing is that diagnosis is based more on a set of given symptoms or behaviours, etc, than on something biological or something which can be tested (with exception to extreme schizophrenia which shows brain changes).
That does not mean that X has a diagnosable condition but based on your brief description then i would tend to think so. HOWEVER, people who committ offenses against another, whether defined as abuse or not, often deal with their internal guilt and rationalize by blaming the other and becoming angry. That can become a pattern of behaviour that does not necessarily mean an illness is present but certainly indicates X needs some help. Trouble is.. you can't tell someone else to get help, they have to see it themselves.
