I too suffer from insomina, and understand how frustrating it can be. I take ativan (0.5mg) under my tongue at night that seems to really help, but I see you don't want to take any meds.
I also have some "sleepy time" tea an hour or so before bed, and I do yoga..the breathing (in through your nose, out through your mouth slowly and rythmically) can help when you're lying in bed staring at the ceiling...gives you an excuse to close your eyes. While I'm breathing, I stretch each part of my body starting with my toes..in and out with the breathing.
Another "trick" is closing your eyes and trying to roll your eyeballs as far back as they can go, hold as long as you can, then let it go back naturally...wierd, but it works!
