When I think of addiction or consider something an addiction it has more to do with the purpose of use--for the most part--than the substance itself.
In my humble opinion, an addictive substance has the purpose of altering one's perception; to alter how reality is affecting us (usually unpleasantly). With alcohol and drugs it's easy to see how being high may feel a LOT better than what reality has to offer. I don't know too much about OA, but I do know a LOT about comfort food; while it might not feel good later, it sure feels good when I'm doing it. Then there are things like gambling; I'm not sure if that fits too well into my theory or not, except that when one gambles, the possibiity of altering reality probably has a strong draw. Could be some addictions are more about controlling the future by attempting to change the present. ??
That's just my 2 teaspoons worth.
