I took antabuse for a short while earlier this year. I discontinued it mainly because I was taking so many other meds at the same time and something had to give. My system felt like it was breaking down. However because my research showed the effect of the antabuse could stay in my system for up to two weeks, that was two more weeks of enforced sobriety.
I did go back to drinking for a couple of months after that, but no harm done. I never expected to change a 29 year situation over night. I used my first substance (glue) when I was nine.
I got myself back into treatment and now I take revia (naltrexone) and campral. Revia is an opiod receptor blocker, but it also helps with cravings in alcoholics. Campral does something to the brain that's supposed to help.
I think the important thing is - something has to break the habit, and the physical addiction. After that it is up to us, whether it is A.A. or some other concept. (i'm still deciding)
I'm on day day 16 now, but what is more important to me is that I drank many days less in 2005 than in 2004. 2006 will be even better, maybe completely sober - one day at a time. Antabuse was part of the process that got me here.
Congratulations on your great beginning. Your willingness to do whatever it takes is going to take you far.James K - starting the new year without a hang-over!
