I have successfully weaned myself off of Effexor without killing anyone!
My new pdoc has put me on Lamictal 25 mg. 2 x a day to startfor bipolar disorder. She has also
given me Zanaflex 4 mg. as needed for these severe headaches I've been having. She has also advised me to cut out caffeine.
Is anyone else on these drugs? Or, have you been on them in the past? Let me know!Autumn

There are 3 or 4 new studies regarding its efficacy in the most recent Abstract Book from the 4th Int. Conf. on BD. It's especially effective for bipolar depression (rapid cycling and one study as a primary stabilizer, too), but I'd be *very* cautious on relying on it as your primary mood stabilizer because it can be more like an antidepressant. Other than the risk for mild rashes that are usually transient and very treatable (approx. 10% incidence, and the extremely rare life-threatening rashes; more likely when used in conjuction with other AEDs) it has a very benign side-effect profile.
Your psychiatrist has given you excellent advice regarding elimination of caffeine in bipolar disorder.

Maraschino,
How much lamictal are you on? And where can I find the abstract you mentioned? Thx.

Hi Autumn,
Been on both drugs; I've gotten manic on lamictal 2x (once pointed out to me on this very board!). But i have a very treatment resistant bp1 condition, and understand (by UCSD researchers who prescribed it for me) that it is very successful in bipolar depression. I find zanaflex very sedating initially- i thought it was a muscle relaxant though. Are your headaches the tension type? take care- judy
