Finally--something is working-at least for now!

Posted by Sarahmarie on May 10, 2002, at 17:45:41

This site has been a great help to me over the last several weeks, when my depression was so low, I was very suicidal, although did not have any plans. In any event, reading what others wrote about medication "poop-out" helped me to realize that I am not alone in this situation. My prozac is at its highest dose ever--but I am doing quite well. I am more focused, feel more encouraged about my job and I really want to do something positive for myself --- like lose at least 20 lb. In any event, I am so afraid that at some point this dosage will also "poop-out", so I will be following closing. For the next 30 days until I see my Pdoc I will be taking 180 mg of Prozac. I also have OCD and possibly Borderline Personality Disorder. I am just grateful to be back to a much more normal state. I am open for any suggestions for exercise programs or whatever. Thanks to all of you.

Happy you feel better. I don't know your age but exercise is like meds..build slowly.
In Texas, we walk to our car and sweat like crazy. Anything that you like to do that makes you sweat profusely is good. On meds, I sweat in an air conditioned room.
Occasionally, I've gotten more depressed with exercise but was probably pushing too hard.
Here's the tough part, eat like a rabbit.
I drink a gallon of water a day and it helps. A lot of feeling bad, even w/o depression, is dehydration. If you are thirsty, you need to drink more water.

Hi SaraMarie,
I'm happy for you and wish you the best in maintaining your current good feelings. One word of advice if the Prozac starts to poop is to consider a mood stabiliser. Lithium has helped me with my recurrent AD poop problem (although I'm currently feeling pretty poopy).

I have a great suggestion for an exercise routine that has worked very well for both myself and husband. I gained over 20 lbs since December from Remeron and Lithium and in desparation surfed the web and came upon Oxycise. The website is www.oxyciseplus.com. I ordered all the videos from Amazon.com where they were a little cheaper and am now up to level III. They only take 15 minutes a day and you don't have to put on the gym shoes, clothes, or drive anywhere. I also try to get in yoga, walking and other forms of exercise, but I can truly say that these videos are the only thing I do consistently and with gratifying results. They work on a specialized breathing method and the extra prana and oxygen help anyway. The fact that my husband also actually wants to do the workouts is pretty amazing in itself. Good luck. - Barbara

Thank you for the encouragement and helpful tips. I did hear that water was essential when starting an exercise program-so I went out and got some Sport bottles of water to make sure that I always have it on hand. Today has been a great day. Thank you.

Hi,
Phil's right about lots of water! I find that my meds really dehydrate me (Depakote, Wellbutrin) and I drink about a gallon a day.

I gained 30 lbs on Celexa and am still in the process of taking it off; I've lost a little over 15 lbs. I have been really dilligent about exercise. (If I skip a few days I notice that I fall back in to a lethargic rut of not wanting to move my body.) In the beginning, when I was getting back in to shape, I would tell myself to just get myself on a treadmill, a stationary bike, or go for a simple walk *15 minutes* a day. I told myself if, at the end of the 15 minutes, I still wanted to stop, it was OK and I didn't make myself feel guilty. What happened was that eventually I didn't want to get off the exercise machine, or end my walk. I kept going, I went for longer, I even picked up my pace after a few weeks. Give yourself permission to take small steps, and you give yourself a larger chance to succeed.

Good luck..I really think you'll lose the weight. Prozac doesn't sem to have a bad rep for weight gain.

Sarah

I am doing well with my new exercise regimen and to my own surprise I have been able to drink up to 96 oz. of water per day. I am just so glad that the Prozac is working right now. I want to take full advantage of this "peaceful" and happy time and lose weight that I have been carrying around long before Prozac. I was kind of hoping that Prozac might help with the weight loss, but it did not. In any event, I managed to stay at my same 25-35 lb. overweight state. I'll keep you informed.

I really appreciate everyone's input. Thanks.

Hi SaraMarie,
What are you doing for your exercise routine? What do you like about it and do you think it's one that will keep you motivated to continue? Always on the lookout for interesting routines, although my favorite is dancing.

Also, another important element is to keep the sludge moving out of the body. Alot of meds cause constipation and I know I sure feel toxic and 'crappy' when I'm not having regular number two's. The water helps with this, but a good health food store colon blow product is a good thing as well. - Barbara

Well, I am having good luck with the exercise regimen. I make sure that I walk at least 30 minutes every other day, and I am planning on including climbing a street that has a hill. Will try this in few days. I also committed myself to the body for life challenge(pushed by a co-worker) and I have 12 weeks to make a significant change in my lifestyle. I tell you adding the water and being diligent about the exercise has made a huge difference. I feel so positive tonight. Usually when I come home from work, I just isolate and hybernate in my house. I did a 30 minute work-out, then ran two errands, and then walked my dog for another 20 minutes. I feel really good. Of course, the Prozac kicking in was a big plus. I hope you are doing better-- Has the lithium helped? Take care. SarahMarie

Hi SaraMarie,
Yes, the lithium seems to be making a big difference even after a few days. I noticed the difference also when I first started taking it this past February and it reconfirms all my Bipolar II suspicions about myself. The kitty is doing much better, and now that I'm not so super sensitized I can be thankful that he wasn't hurt worse, rather than dwelling on how awful it was that he got hurt at all.

So glad you've got the exercise bug working for you. Keeping our energy moving is the answer to life as far as I'm concerned. But how difficult it is to jump start ourselves once we've gotten mired in the swamps of depression! It takes faith, baby, and just doing it. - Barbara
