Bad day or do I need a Lex increase?

Posted by Wildflower on September 16, 2003, at 17:38:20

First let me start off by thanking all of you for you posts. It's been very comforting to know that I'm not alone in what I'm going through. Actually, checking the posts seems to help me get through the day.

I'm on my 23rd day of Lexapro (10mg) and I haven't really noticed too much of a change yet. The last two days have been absolutly horrible for me (work and relationship-wise) and the tears keep coming. Have I just had two bad days or do I need an increase in my med?

I should mention that it was my family doctor who prescribed the lex. He's not readily available to answer questions like this or else I'd give him a call.

I'd really apprecate your opinions on this. Thanks in advance!

Hi Wildflower:-) Nope~you're definately not alone, remember that always. May your days be more comforting:-)
I take 10mg of Lexapro also. Sometimes when we're going through other things, like work and relationship-issues, the medication can only do so much. BUT, please give it a chance. I had good days and bad days, but at my 23rd day, I began to notice that I was indeed *dealing* with things better.......better able to sort out answers to my heartache, not feel suicidal, hopeless, etc.
And so it will be for you I hope:-)
My PCP doc was the one who started me on Lexapro also, but I believe it would be to benefit to you to find a psychiatrist who is more specifically trained with these sorts of medication/area/specialization.
**In the meantime, by all means, call your doc who prescribed the Lexapro~after all he/she DID give it to you/put you on it. It's only fair he/she be there to answer questions when you need them answered;)
Do you have a psychiatrist? Keep us posted, and if you need anything~just ask~we're a friendly, helpful bunch:-)((hugs)) to you.

Thanks Gal! I really thought I was losing my mind yesterday and I suppose it's easier to blame the meds than admit an out of control life. I feel a little better today but I had a horrible time getting out of bed this morning. All I wanted to do was sleep the day away.

Nope, no psychiatrist. I had a psychologist a while ago but he didn't believe in meds and my family doc had me on effexor and then prozac. Needsless to say I stopped going. I'll try to find one soon but I'm so afraid of opening up to strangers (in person that is...)

You are just now @ 4 weeks, this is about the time I got deep depression and anxiety and was convinced the med would NEVER work and I really wanted to quit SO BAD!!! but the great people on this board helped me through it. I was @ 5mg, and towards the end of wk5 I went to 10mg. That seemed to help a little. It was well into week 9 befor I realized that I was acually doing much better.

Please don't get discouraged, as it might get worse for you befor it gets better. Take it a day at a time, when you feel low come here for support, and keep us posted on how you are doing.

We are all pulling for you!~~~8|8

If things don't improve in the next couple of weeks, consider asking your doc for a dose increase. I'm doing really well on 20 mg Lexapro. I have been on 20 mg since Lexapro first came out about 12 months a go.

Also, if you feel comfortable with your doc, don't worry about him or her being a family doc. Only about 30% of antidepressants are prescribed by pdocs. (That may be a bit misleading since sometimes a pdoc will start a patient out on a med, and then the family doc will do the maintenance.)

Hi, So glad to hear you're feeling a little better today~GREAT! Even a little is a lot ;)>>>>>I suppose it's easier to blame the meds than admit an out of control life.
**Thanks to this board~I am realizing this more and more:-) I am so guilty of this!
Yeah isn't it odd how we can *open up* behind a computer, but not in person sometimes?!
Oh how I hear you!
Take care of YOU :-)
Try to keep us posted:-)

Dear Bill L., Mariposa and Wildflower,

Thank you for your posts about Lexapro - I am now about 8 months on this med and having some doubts myself about bad days versus upping my dosage. I started out at 5 mg, went through a hellish adjustment period of about 10 weeks, slowly upping myself to 10 mgs at my docs advice. After that first 2 months or so, I really started to feel like myself again. My joy and energy felt accessible again - what a relief! I kicked butt at work and loved life.

In the last few months life has gotten crazy again. My boyfriend and I bought and completely remodeled a house (what an addict I am!) and he (my boyfriend) recently filed for full custody of his kids (3) in response to his ex's total failure as a mother. I love these kids but after 15 years of single and kid-free adult life, I can see why that could give me anxiety.

I need to acknowledge that because I know that meds are not the answer to everything. I fully comprehend that stressful times create stress for everyone and that to feel my feelings is appropriate. That being said, I am having anxiety, lack of energy - all the usual precursors to a full-on depression. I saw my doc recently for a follow-up on the meds and when I relayed all of the recent events to her she asked what my dosage of Lexapro is. I told her 10 mg and she told me that is not even considered a therapeutic dosage and perhaps I should up it to 20 mg per day.

Help! It's funny how much this board means to me - even when I just read and don't post. I rely on you guys in the trenches with me as much as the docs. So the question is....when is it just a bad day/week/month and when is it time to up the dosage? Also, is that true that 10 mg is not considered therapeutic? I want to be happy and not torture my family, friends and of course myself. Yuck - I hate mood disorders!!!!!!

Is 10 mg the most common dose for most people on Lex? Seems to be from reading posts. What is considered the maximum dose for Lex?
Thanks!

Hi McPac, I've seen people here on as high as 20mg of Lexapro. That's the max I've seen actually. I wonder if anyoone has taken more than 10mg a day???? I'm sure it's different with everybody. I wonder if I'll ever have to increase from my 10mg.
Good question!!!
