Klonopin, how much is ok???

Posted by woolav on September 15, 2005, at 15:28:20

I am in a very very stressful time in my life right now. Like life altering changes. I have to find a new job and I am cutting ties with some family members. So, I was doing ok before, taking 1mg 3 times a day of klonopin. but I know that now with going to interviews and just the stress is causing panic attacks. Should I ask my pdoc to temp. raise my klonopin? I see him tomorrow.

Normally panic attacks are managed at a limit of 4mg/day of Klonopin but some take higher. The lowest possible is generally best, but your doctor should know how you respond to medications. The main issue is decreased reaction time in driving (at least initially) (and at extreme doses of benzodiazepines, respiratory (lung) depression. Not something though to worry at 4mg typically)

Hope that helps

You should have no problem taking 4-5 mgs/day on "bad days" then go back down.

hi! if you're having problems, and you think that an increase in Klonopin (temporary or permanent) will help you out, you should feel free to talk to your doc about it. You may also want to consider an add-on, short-acting benzo, like Ativan. Although it is true that a benzo is a benzo (is a benzo), Klonpin lasts a long time so you might spend all day under extra sedation when really all you need is a couple hours of added tranquilizing action. In my experience, 1-2mgs added to 3-4mgs of klonopin is easy to manage...ativan is easy to withdraw from when you no longer need it and it doesn't cause drug-induced depression like Klonopin tends to at higher doses. Good lucK!

Woolav, I know I'm late on the Thread but how did it go? Xanax would also help with panic attacks . Are you better now? Fondly, Phillipa

I've done exactly the same during particularly difficult times and can also recommend using Ativan as a more fast-acting benzo. It tends to get into and leave my system more quickly -- better for extreme anxiety. I mostly use klonopin for sleeping. If you don't have any addiction issues, your doctor should have no problem prescribing Ativan for the short-term. Best of luck! Lauren
