do you agree with what my family doc said?

Posted by Happyflower on April 21, 2007, at 17:41:53

He said the fact that I am asking for help, after trying other things for controling stress like yoga (breathing), exercise, resting, distraction, that saying hey , these things are not working especially during finals, that I am not giving up.
He said he has seen many students especially in med school when they do need perfect grades, go through this. A lot turn to illegal means for stress, but I am choosing legal means for help. (xanax)

He thinks it will help me learn when I have a huge amount of stress, which sometimes is unavoidable, especially the pressures I have for trying to keep a 4.0 grade point average so I can get into a great grade school. I probably won't be able to keep a 4.0 because that is rare, but I would like to keep it in the high range.
Is he right, taking meds occationally for stress isn't giving up or not being good enough on my own? What are your thoughts? By the way xanax is awesome! ;-)

He is right. (nm) » Happyflower

I think it is a sign of strength to ask for help when you need it!

Accepting the fact that you take meds » Happyflower

Thats the bigger issue here for you.

If the truth be told, none of WANT to take meds. I struggled mightly for two years because I thought taking meds made me "weak." One day my Sunday school teacher, who is also the chief surgeon of a major hospital, told me that "God gives doctors the knowledge to make these meds to help people." Since then, I have accepted that I take meds and may for the rest of my life.

You may feel like your alone, but youre not. I bet at least at least half the ppl you know are on some type of meds for something (anxiety, depression, panic attacks, etc.). You'll find out when you bring up the subject in front of them.

I suggest that you take the benzos (I prefer Klonopin over Xanax) when needed, and do all the other things for controlling stress (Yoga, exercise, etc.), and you will do great.

We're here for you.

Hey Thanks everyone!

It is very nice to meet some new people here too on Babble. It seem like I should believe my doc. And Ugotta, maybe I am struggling with feeling more weaker for needed drugs, but like my doc. said, asking for help is different than just giving up. Thanks everyone! I feel better about it now. ;-)

I am having a similar experience right now. My T wants me to try a benzo (probably klonopin) to help during the last weeks of the semester, but I told her I didn't need to. There are definitely times that I am more stressed out than necessary, but I don't think it's unusual. For instance, if I said, right this minute, that I am too anxious to function, I would be lying. Then again, my perception of excessive anxiety vs. "normal" anxiety is probably skewed.

It would be interesting to try the meds once and see what happens. Maybe I'll tell her that tomorrow.

Thanks for making this post, Happyflower-- it helped me too.

Hi Peddidle,
Nice to meet ya! I have just taken my first and only pill last Thurs, a really stressful day for me in school, and it worked great. I was expecting some weird feeling like when you get your first buzz from drinking, but it wasn't anything like that. It was like taking a nice afternoon nap, waking up refreshed. Anxiety gone! Plus later that night I sleep like a baby.

I think your T might be on to something about anxitey and the ablilty to work well. I got a C on one of my exam because I blanked out probably due to anxiety, and it was an essay test, no way to BS my way through that one. But yet I knew every answer, and it wasn't from craming either.

Well the real test will be this Tues., when I have to give a group presentation. Yikes! I will let you know if it works. ;-) Good luck to you on your finals! I will be so glad when they are over!

He sounds very rare, nice, and wise! Doesn't that make you feel better to be told such things? I'd love a doctor flat out told me I was being strong and smart for asking for Xanax.

Not that mine makes me feel criminal, but I'm not getting much reassurance these days.

It doesn't surprise me that this comes from your family doctor. They tend to be affectionate and protective of their long-time patients. The care you get is personal.

Good luck with finals! What year are you in? Is this undergrad or grad school?
