Hi!
Any experience on how well stimulants, especially Ritalin work against depression in long term in case main line drugs does not work(except the MAOI's)? How would you compare taking a MAOI like Nardil or being on a stimulant like Ritalin? Do the stimulants always crash in the evenings leaving you feeling anxious and drained?
I'm off Nardil for over a month now because it stopped working. Based on my long term experience with the drug i know 1 month is enough to reverse the tolerance and if restarted it'll work again for another year at least.
For over a month now the emotional pain of depression and anxiety has been high above the critical level of human tolerance so i'm going back on Nardil immediately to avoid self-destruction. My second option would be to try a stimulant (which i'v never tried before) if my doctor is willing to prescribe it in the first place of course.
Just for the information, Brintellix didn't work for me, tried it for 6 weeks after stopping nardil.
I'm considering the switch because of the side-effects of Nardil: weight-gain, nightmares, parasomnia, excessive sweating to name a few.
Any long-term experiences with stimulants against TRD?
Tnx!

I took ritalin, concerts and adder all each for a few months. Initially, they got me out of bed and moving and my depression had made me pretty much catatonic. But my mood didn't really lift. And after a week or two, the energy boost didn't really occur either. I would feel enervated and tired. So stimulants didn't work for depression for me.

Not in the long run, and not on their own. I've only had them as adjunct. And I second what baseball wrote. They got me out of bed, and that in itself is good, but overall not putting a real dent in depression. Idk if you've got adhd...then stimulants may have a different place in your treatment plan. Good luck!

yea i rerember taking dexedrine mainly was a buzzer in the morning to do things, prozac was the main one that cleaned up the depression, psychostimulants usally just made me get up and moving, still i would have some sadness and depression even during stimulation......and sometimes intensified my deep feelings and thoughts
i think stimulant with AD is a good option for low energy, poor response to traditional antidepressants
but really stimulants just release dopamine and NE, serotonin is some how linked in mood cases, yet with low dopamine levels are linked to low motivtion and some cognitive disorders......
serotonin plays a role in the mood......

Adderall only did so much, and only for so long. It was really just a crude instrument, to get energy and concentration and stop eating so much, lol.
Now, Adderall plus other stuff, in my case Tofranil-PM...was helpful. Each person is different. I seem to recall reading that TCA+amphetamine is particularly effective for some people. I don't know if that's true or some over-generalization based on shoddy research (quite common in psychiatry).
I wouldn't take stimulants alone, I'd come up with a reasonable cap for dosage (high doses can make things worse), and I'd only take uppers with other meds.
Just my advice.
