Supplements for Migraine

Posted by doxielover on November 22, 2004, at 12:10:58

I typed up this whole thread earlier and it seems to have dissapeared, so forgive me if it ends up showing twice.

I've been searching for supplements to help get rid of migraines. What I have tried for the last few months is fish oil (2-4 grams a day) and Magnesium Taurate. I haven't been as regular with the magnesium as I probably should, but everytime I start getting the does up (around 500mg a day) I get diarrhea, so I stop taking it for a few days. This combo has not decreased my migraines.

My doctor suggested adding a B vitamin supplement. I bought one this weekend (Trader Joe's brand), but then I read that someone on here had help with migraines from just Niacin. Will I still get niacin effects from a multi-B-supplement?

What other suggestions do people have? Has anyone out there had luck with supplements, combinations of supplements? I read something about CoQ10? Seems expensive, is it worth it?

I found this link:

scroll down to Vitamin Supplementation and you will see a note about using vitamin B2 (riboflavin) 400mg/day. Hope this helps.

Hello Doxielover, I have heard that feverfew has been shown to help migraines with some success when taken on a daily basis. I have also heard that niacin only works when taken before the pain starts right after the light sensitivity. Niacin needs to be taken by itself at a minimum of 500mg to 1000mg right away to dialate the blood vesels and create the red flushing sensation. Non flushing niacin will not work. Keep an emergency supply of it in your pocket at all times.

Also pay attention to your diet just before the migraines occur. My girl friend discovered that milk caused hers. No to say that milk is causing yours, just planting an idea. Not all migraines are caused by food intolerances, but worth looking into.

I hope this helps.

You might want to look into Ginger, either in powder or capsul form. Ginger apparently can provide migraine relief, as well as relief from the accompanying nausea.

I just read that a Thomas Jefferson University study revealed that taking a daily dose (150 mg) of Co-enzyme Q10 slashed the frequency of excruciating headaches/migraines by 50% for almost 2/3 of sufferers.
