Fish oil for ADHD-how much?

Posted by h on April 19, 2005, at 15:03:44

Larry and others,

I've read interesting information about kids with ADHD responding well to Fish oil. Our son has a mild, sublclinical case of ADHD. I've been giving him one to two Tablespoons of Carlson's Fish Oil mixed up in Applesauce for the past week every morning.

My problem is this: I"ve read it recommended to give them Omega 3's combined with Omega 6s. However I know from my own experience that the 6s have an estrogenic effect. I don't want my son growing boobs or anything like that.

Is there something else you can recommend that might help, oil wise?

Any thoughts or advise warmly welcomed.

There's no need whatsoever to supplement any source of omega 6's. We get WAY too many of these in our diet today when we need to be getting more omega 3's. Plus, I think the idea that omega 6's in excess would be estrogenic is nonsense. Plenty of people in the USA get 40 times more omega 6's than our ancestry has had and I don't see them growing feminine features. Don't worry about that. The fish oil is good, though, very good.

If you really want help as far as oils besides fish oil, watch to make sure that the fats he eats are refined as little as possible. For example, chips are horrible. Not only do they usually use an oil like cottonseed oil, which is very high in omega 6's, but the oil is extremely oxidized which can lead to a strong metabolic burden on his antioxidant levels. Diets that lower antioxidant levels can result in decreased cognitive function.

Supplement with extra virgin coconut oil or olive oil if he'll go with it... both are extremely healthy.

I second all that Mistermindmasta said. You do not have to worry in the slightest about omega-6. And there is no estrogenic effect, period.

I would add in an adult multivitamin. Something like Centrum.

You may find that taking this test (link below)leads to some specific supplement ideas....not all ADHD is the same. There are sub-types. Amen does make some good recommendations for supplements, although his tests seem to over-diagnose the existence of ADHD. I think I test positive for three different types of ADHD, but I feel that it is my comorbidities of chronic fatigue syndrome and depression that boost my scores. I do probably have the trait, though.

Larry,

Thanks for your post. In addition to the Carlson's, I've started adding a little b vitamin complex. And yes, thanks for the info regarding the Omega 6. My dr. said the same thing.:)

He is eight and weighs about fifty pounds. About how long do you think before we see results? I am giving him about two tsp of the Carlsons per day and it's been about 10 days.

thanks for everything
h
