Anxiety very bad today

Posted by kiwiredbeach on November 29, 2006, at 18:24:25

My anxiety is very very bad today, I never seem to get any relief, my mind seems to be totaly focused inwards and this drives me nuts. My anxiety so bad that I spend most of my time in my bedroom. Ive had anxiety for 19 years, which was mainly panic attacks, but recently thats all changed, I dont get panic attacks I just get constant gnawing anxiety thats non stop. Recntly Ive being doing some breathing execises and its made my anxiety worse, how can this be so, ANY advise or sharing of experinces would be greatly appreciated at this rather low moment.

Hi Kiwi
That sounds horrible for you...

You could try what I outlined in the post above called "Accidently discovered something"...

Complete amelioration of anxiety has followed within 45 minutes of each dose...

That's Magnesium 800mg taken at the same time with Acetyl l - Carnitine 500mg.

Hope you feel better.

Ello Kiwi,

I really can sympathise with your problem. I've had it for many years too and at its worst it truly is soul destroying.

Tell me, do you drink alcohol? How do you feel after the occasional session of drink? Does the drink remove the anxiety? How long does it stay gone after an evening of drinking?

Also supps, have you found any that help in the long term or are they patchy in performance?

The reason I ask, is I often end up taking lots of supps to get me through lengthy tough spells but end up finding the supps are prolonging or worseoning the bad spell and that quiting the supps temporarily leaves me feeling great (which seems odd).

Can't get my head around it fully BUT the one thing I have got my head around is that however bad we may feel, its the fear of the anxiety that acually keeps us feeling at our worst. Not quite sure how to consistently break the cycle, but to have a good drink isn't a bad OCCASIONAL strategy to break the chain once in a while provided one has the strength of mind to know that the real long term answers are not to be found at the bottom of the bottle.

wishing you all the best

TJ

Sorry to hear about your bad day Kiwiredbeach.

There is a phenomenon called "hyperventilation syndrome" (HVS). Here is some info you might appreciate from an article from emedicine:

"Part of the explanation for HVS lies in the mechanics of breathing. Normal tidal volumes range from 35-45% of vital capacity at rest. Hyperinflation of the lungs beyond that level is resisted by the elastic recoil of the chest wall, and inspiratory volumes beyond this level are perceived as effort or dyspnea."

"Patients with HVS tend to breathe by using the upper thorax rather than the diaphragm, resulting in chronically overinflated lungs. When stress induces a need to take a deep breath, the deep breathing is perceived as dyspnea. The sensation of dyspnea creates anxiety, which encourages more deep breathing, and a vicious cycle is created."

Here's a link to the entire articlhttp://www.emedicine.com/emerg/topic270.htme:

Even if you don't chronically hyperventilate, I surmise from the article that deep breathing can in fact create or exacerbate anxious states as deep breathing may induce a sensation of shortness of breath triggering a vicious cycle in the brain. I'm not an expert but from personal experience I've found it best for me not to concentrate on my breathing at all if I can help it during periods of severe anxiety. But everyone's different.

I also think there's a lot to be said for Magnesium as aeon suggested. Be aware though that it can be toxic in high doses (or lower dose even in people with kidney disease).

Best to you. Peace...Saturn.

Kiwi,
You have GAD (generalized anxiety disorder). I have it and it's been about to drive me over the edge. I just keep trying to tell myself that "what we think is how we feel" to get me anxiety under some control. I am on 50mg. of Paxil CR daily now. I'm still hoping and waiting for some significant relief. I'm also trying to learn CBT. The thing is, I'm not 100% sure it'll help as I don't have to have anything specific to make me get anxed-out! Of course, CBT is partly about training the mind to view matters in a different light. If you want to try CBT, you do a free online course. It is found here: http://moodgym.anu.edu.au/default.asp
Wishing you the best!
