can fish oil disrupt sleep?

Posted by g_g_g_unit on January 12, 2010, at 16:16:22

my sleep is in tatters as it is, but i think it may have gotten worse since i added high-EPA fish oil to my regime about three weeks ago. is this possible?

i take two-stage-release melatonin every night to fall asleep (i think MAOI trials messed my sleep cycles), but there was a period where i was falling asleep on my own. now i can't, and the only change i can think of has been the fish oil ..

i would hate to ditch it 'cos of the numerous benefits, but sleep comes first

It's known to do that. Do you take it in the morning? Some recommend that, to prevent insomnia. You could also try lowering the dose. Krill oil is similar to fish oil (many say superior), so you could try that instead. Even though it's more expensive, the recommended dosage is less and the pills are a lot smaller.

I take krill every once in a while, not every day, because it (like fish oil) makes my skin really oily if I take it all the time. Fish oil made me anxious too. It doesn't seem like krill does to the same extent.

Are you noticing benefits from the fish oil?

Really fish oil causes insominia and anxiety I had no idea? I thought of it as a benign but helpful supplement. Phillipa

i believe i was (though i am prone to placebo responses) - i felt a little sharper, and it helped clear some of the brain fog.

i was taking it in the morning, with breakfast, but i figured the long half-life might cause problems anyway.

off fish oil, my insomnia is just as bad, so i guess i can resume it with a clear conscience.

i suppose its possible, but i don't think treating insomnia by w-3 deficiency is a good idea.

I take fish oil, a very small dosage, about 1,500mg per day, but I take it early in the day, and it doesn't seem to affect my sleep. If you are taking high dosages of fish oil, some people have said that it actually enhances their sleep, but it is possible that it may affect your sleep negatively. However, sometimes the mental illness itself is the main cause of sleep disturbances. Supplements that affect my sleep in a negative way are for example, high doses of Vitamin C, N-acetyl-cysteine or l-cysteine, high doses of Calcium, and there may be others. A few supplements you may want to try that have helped me with sleep are: 400IU of natural vitamin E at bedtime; 50mg of B6; 100mg of B1; 250mg of B3; 200IU of selenium; plus the melatonin you take which you become dependent on for sleep. I notice if I don't take my melatonin at night (I only take 1mg), I just can't sleep. My recommendation is try a low dosage of fish oil early in the day. I doubt it would cause insomnia for you.
