Taurine- I'm confused...

Posted by phinxeezaDr on October 25, 2013, at 17:14:30

Hi all. I've done a little reading about Taurine and it seems that it helps with nerves & sleep, bit like a benzo. I'm having chronic nightmares and am trying to solve them using supplements. I've read that Taurine crosses the bb barrier easily and acts as/like a calming neurotransmitter. Perhapse indirectly boosting GABA?? So I've bought some bulk Taurine powder. Then I remembered that most energy drinks contain Taurine too. WTF? How can something be a calmer, if it acts as a stimulant/activator too??! Others take Taurine as a focus enhancer just prior to a workout. I find that just as confusing lol

I don't know what to tell you, lol.

I take 4-6 grams/day, in at least 2 divided doses. The 4 grams comes from a study in Australia (I think...) where they found that 4 grams taurine/day made an AAP work better in acute psychosis. There's also some indication, from animal studies, that taurine may reduce brain damage caused by the neuroleptics and possibly decrease the risk of TD (I take Abilify @ 20mgs/day, so this is a big deal).

I do think taurine kinda sorta helps my anxiety. I also take niacinamide @ 6 grams/day, so its probably the combination that keeps me calm.

Anyway, I'm no taurine expert or anything..just sharing what I do and what I've read with you. Good luck to you!

Well it definitely helped me and made my sleeping deeper. Too early to say it helps the nightmares. Oh, and in comparison L-theanine is crap. Or at least no where as strong as taurine. I tried theanine for dreams but also to hopefully exchange someof my clonazepam dose. Maybe if taurine does work I can try dropping my clonazepam to as small a dose I can get down my dosage.

I think taurine is in energy drinks to take the edge off of the caffeine and other stimulant alkaloids.

Makes sense, but I thought that L-theanine would be a better choice for that. Especialy as its found in tea. Mind you typical energy drinks, even sugar free versions hit you harder than the same amount of pure caffeine (Pep Pills/Pro Plus). And tea, which is rich in L-theanine is much more soothing than coffee.
