I have been referred to a psychiatrist who's office is actually IN a mental hospital and this is the first time I'll be seeing one who works there. The others have all had private practices. Is there any difference? What should I expect?
I'm a little nervous about going into the hospital itself every week to see him.thanks

The ones working in hospitals carry stethoscopes and have shaky hands and self medicate intravenously. You cannot tell difference between docs and the patients
While the private ones are smarter but insane.

:-).I think all pdocs have to do a working spell in hospitals , some do both--work in hospital and do private but I'm in UK and so my post is probably useless .
Be well.....

In my experience hospital docs also have a private practice (which I assume is your case). They usually get discounted office space in turn for being on call and get pretty well paid for those visits to the hospital (like $200+ for 10 minutes). I saw one privately that I met when I was in the hospital- but it did freak me out when I went to the hospital to see him- only because I expected to be involuntarily thrown in at any moment. But that's my phobia and basically he acted the same as any 'traditional' private pdoc, so I don't see why this one won't work for you. best of luck- judy

My experence is that some hospitals offer
office space. I see most of my non-psyco
docs at a hospital, which is easy. So, for me there is no difference at all,
just the docs choice of where to locate
an office. This does seem to save the doc some on lab costs,
as mine use the hospital lab. Kinda nice, as a private doc would often have to send you across town for some tests. Located in a hospital, the lab is a short walk away.

tina,
the guy in a mental hospital might have more patients, so you might feel like more of a number. on the positive side, there are usually more resources at the hospital. (like, in an emergency, if your doc was unreachable, there'd be another one on call at all hours.)
having one person to sort of 'follow' your case should take the feeling of being anonymous away.
i've found that i prefer smaller, more private places, but that's because i feel at big places if more hands touch you, and one person thinks you have x diagnosis, then the others will stick to that belief and tend to corroborate it -- instead of seeing what's really in front of them.
yet, i would still try the new guy.
This is the end of the thread.
