Just wondering about peoples recommendations about their most important book or author that have made an impact in changing their life for the better.

Cheers

Well, I suppose I could put down something like "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" by David Burns M.D., which I'm almost certain EVERYONE on the board has read or at least heard of, but I don't know that it was really life-changing for me.

Honestly? The books I have found to be life-changing were children's books, like the Little House on the Prairie series (taught me about healthy familial life and certain moral values) and "Oh The Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss, that I actually got for college graduation from a friend. That book was much more of a mood-lifter than "Feeling Good" or any positive affirmation book I've ever seen.

I'd just like to plug the double double quotes feature at this site:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#amazon

The first time anyone refers to a book without using this option, I post this to try to make sure he or she at least knows about it. It's just an option, though, and doesn't *have* to be used. If people *choose* not to use it, I'd be interested why not, but I'd like that redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration:

Thanks!

Bob

PS: It's up to you all, but this might be an interesting thread for Psycho-Babble Books, too...

Whoops! I didn't even think about it, Dr. Bob! Thanks for the reminder.

THanks Penny.

That Dr Seuss looks like a cracker of a book... I know Im gonna get that one for sure!!!

I actually havent read that book by David Burns... might have a look at it.

I was interested in that metacognition book that mattdds talked about in an above neverending post. THat book he mentioned was written in 2001 i think. Has anyone read any good book about metacognition recently? That one will cost me over 100 bucks so im wondering if there is a newer and better and cheaper on around to buy :)

Or maybe one of those online reading places where they adobe the books for ya to browse.

The Depression Book: Depression as an Opportunity for Spiritual Growth--Cheri Huber
ISBN: 096362556X

Slightly (hah, very but gentle in its message) buddhist in nature but a kind, gentle book that I've turned to many, many times as the black dog comes chasing me down. My copy is tattered from rereading since 1995. I find this one of the best books I've got on depression and self acceptance of living with such an illness and I've got at least 50 professonal texts and lay person books on the subject.

Can be purchased at:
http://www.powells.com/
http://www.booksense.com/

From Booksense.com: Independent booksellers are passionate about sharing their love of books with their customers and communities. After you enter your Zip code and click "Continue Shopping," you'll be presented with book information from the BookSense.com store nearest you.

BookSense.com gives you the opportunity to shop online at your locally owned, bricks-and-mortar independent bookstore ... 24 hours a day!

Dr. Bob already knows why I do not use the double quote feature to link to Amazon. I've included the ISBN so that people who wish to support such a place may type that number in to order from there if they so wish.

Life changing books » samplemethod

Hi everyone,

Here's my broken record sales pitch about CBT again:

Life changing books for me:

"Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy"
"The Feeling Good Handbook"

Both by David Burns, MD.

Honestly, reading these books is not life changing, but actually doing the exercises very consistently was most definitely *the* turning point in my life. Deep inside, I am quite sure I would have committed suicide by now were it not for the information contained in these books(I do not exaggerate here, or take this lightly, I'm quite serious, I was REALLY a mess).

Incidentally, with more recent self-CBT, over the last 2 months I have felt better than I've ever felt in my life! I seem to be getting better over the months. CBT takes a long time, and diligence, but it works!

So I wouldn't look for life changing books, I doubt they exist. But doing the exercises in these books consistently and for an extended period of time is extremely helpful for me; the mainstay of my recovery. I'd credit CBT 80%, and Klonopin with the other 20%.

Best wishes!

Matt

My "life-altering" book was John Bradshaw's "The Family".

It's about family dysfunction, but that's where I came from.......
