Is There A Doctor In The House?

Posted by T_R_D on January 7, 2004, at 13:03:19

Hi All, another post.

A few years ago I was admitted to the ER for a rather nasty suicide attempt. I basically swallowed my entire medicine cabinet--a mix of prescription ADs and benzos, plus some OTC pain killers. When the paramedics arrived I was still conscious but barely...within seconds of their arrival I passed out.

When I awoke I was still in the ER, on oxygen, a heart monitor and with a catheter. I have a fairly good idea why but I'm looking to confirm my suspicions. Also, I'm curious what they did to me to counteract the effects of the drugs. I've done activated charcoal when I was awake but when unconscious how would they have treated me?

Thanks for your insight.

Ask for your records, there is no way for someone to guess what happened.

Oh yes...I forgot to mention that! I did take a peek at my records and nothing was written, presumably because there were no complications after their procedures.

Thanks for your response.

what happened only your doc would know. ask him. presumably your stomach would have been pumped (gastric lavage), but whether you had to be intubated, given meds, CPR, etc. only your doc can answer...

they can still use charcoal even if your not awake. Also, how come your inquiring about this? Your not thinking of taking pills again?

Oh no no no! But thanks for asking! I guess I was just always curious and thought this might be a good forum since there seem to be a lot of knowledgeable people out there. Thanks for asking though! Thankfully my suicide attempt days are over! Drugs have made a new person out of me!

Thanks kbl...all of these things have crossed my mind...I guess I just have a sort of morbid curiosity about it all. Plus I am super interested in med. stuff.

I like your posts btw...where are you from in Canada? I'm in Toronto :) I toyed with the idea of becoming a pharmacist when I was young...but I convinced myself that my math skills weren't good enough to pursue the career path. I'm going to go back to school and get my BScN though!

Thanks, if luck goes my way I'll be doing it when I'm 36 ;) My greetings to the nation's capital!

That is not possible, they billed you from those records.

Hi stjames...I wasn't "billed" as I live in Canada...I'm not sure about how doctors file to our provinces for payment for procedures done and if copies of a patient's file are sent to the government. I would think not for confidentiality reasons.

records of billing...no. and there is no way you'd get to see what was billed to the province. the hospital records, however, are different. your family doc should have gotten a copy if they knew who he was. if not, then the records are still stored with the hospital. the attending physician at the time would have access to them. or your family doc can request them now. you're not being morbid at all...you have a right to know if you want to...
