Parnate and fatigue

Posted by fritz on November 11, 2003, at 11:11:26

I started taking 20 mg Parnate 2 weeks ago and have experienced extreme fatigue--requiring a couple of naps daily--in past when ssris worked to help with my treatment resistant depression, I was energized and very active--had lots of energy (which is the normal me)--now, I'm not depressed but have no energy--I used 2 mugs of coffee which doesn't do anything----could the low energy be side effect of Parnate?----will it go away with time???? In advance, thanks for responding.--FRITZ

Hey fritz,

I've been on Parnate for about 3.5 months now. For the first week or so when starting I was really groggy, but that goes away and soon you'll start feeling pretty charged. I started getting insomnia maybe 3 weeks after beginning. Also when I raised the dose from 30-40, I experienced the same fatigue for about a week, again. I'm in college, so I could afford (and really enjoy) a nice, peaceful afternoon nap.

The orthostatic hypotension was a big problem for me (especially after naps), and caffeine made this much worse, so maybe be careful with that. I also found 40 mg to be a bit too taxing on my heart and BP, but I think different people can tolerate different dosages...

Is this all-day fatigue or times of "slump"? The slump is familiar to many of us on Parnate and should improve with time. If it becomes a big problem for you, discuss augmentation with your pdoc. If it is all day fatigue, it will definitely get better with time and higher dosages. Little tricks to deal with both kinds are to keep a little something in your stomach and dont get too hungry, go for a walk outside (i know its the last thing you feel like doing) and try to limit your naps to not much more than an hour. Good luck and hang in there.

I also experienced this...and deprssion. I used to need a break after working for 2 mins!

I believe it will in time. Give it a few weeks but, and like MelD said, you might need augmentation if it doesn't wane. But hang in there for a while and you might start feeling the characteristic stimulating feel of Parnate.

Good luck!

Ace.

Fritz i had the exact same experience with Parnate. I loved the relaxation as i suffered with anxiety but after a few weeks of sleeping almost every spare moment i had to get off of it I dn't know how long it would take for that side effect to wear off

i've been thinking about this, and i'm pretty sure a major part of the Parnate fatigue is a result of alpha adrenergic stimulation, especially because of the accompanying dizziness and what not. After awhile i believe the alpha receptors adapt, however, and beta receptor (and sympathetic) stimulation becomes prominent. It just takes awhile sometimes.
