Oxycodone and ADHD

Posted by lucia on November 27, 2009, at 13:09:13

I have had a disorder called Trichotillomania for about 15 years...and have tried numerous medications, nothing seemed to help the symptoms...I was diagnosed with ADHD about 4 years ago, I had recently been in the hospital for Endocarditis, (a heart infection.) While in the hospital they put me on a very strong pain medication, after leaving the Hospital they gave me a prescription for Oxycodone 10mg three time a day...to help with the pain and to ween me off all the drugs they had given me during my stay, I started seeing a Phsychiatrist while I was taking the Oxycodone, we noticed that the pain medication, instead of really relieving the pain, was showing huge signs of reducing ADHD symptoms...My councelor and I decided that we wold try Oxycodone 5mg three times a day, since it was helping so much with my symptoms...sure enough, I was pretty much symptom-free while taking this medication...I can focus much more, and complete tasks I would normally put off until a later date...which turned into never...I also found dealing with the Trichotillomania a lot easier due to the fact I wasn't sitting around thinking about it all the time....has anyone else had the same reaction to this medication? It is very rare and hard to convince people that it works....

Well, your 'ADHD' was probably caused by the attentional problems associated with the trichotillomania, which is an OCD spectrum disorder. Oxycodone is an opioid analgesic medication and opioids are used as augmentation treatment for OCD. The reason your attention has improved and your not thinking about pulling your hair out all the time now is due to the fact the Oxycodone is succesfully treating the OCD/Trichotillomania, not the ADHD.

If you have ADHD, you should be treated with stimulants, preferably Dexedrine, which works to treat ADHD and OCD.

Rather than opiates alone, you really should be on an antidepressant, like Luvox or Prozac, with the Oxycodone used as augmentation.

I have OCD and treat it with Anafranil, a tricyclic antidepressant. I also augment this treatment with Tramadol, which is an opioid agonist and acts like your Oxycodone. I also have ADHD and treat that with Dexedrine, which also helps with my OCD.

Hope this helps...

No offense but oxycodone helps with everything.

What dose of Tramadol do you use? If one has been on a strong narcotic such as oxycodone would one respond to a much weaker opiate such as tramadol?

Good question as the oxy helps so many conditions. Know from experience. Phillipa

I use 50-100 mg of Tramadol.

A couple of things set Tramadol apart from regular opiates

1. Tramadol has SNRI qualities, inhibiting reuptake of seratonin and norepinephrine.
2. Tramadol is also a NMDA antagonist, which means it works on one of the key neurotransmitters implicated in OCD.

All around its a pretty good antidepressant and analgesic.

Bulldog:

You can take Oxycodone and Vicodin if you're on Parnate, but not Tramadol or demerol.

I have posted before about my use of Vicodin (almost the same thing as Oxycodone) for depression.

((My main medication is Parnate, now augmented since a few days ago with Lithium. I was up to 40 milligrams of Parnate and it was just impossible to sleep. So I am now down to 30 again and still have trouble sleeping. Also the sexual side effects really bother me, at anything above 20 mg.))

When I get acutely depressed one half of a 5/500 Vicodin will calm me down and allow me to function. I used it effectively and "appropriately" in my opinion during the 10 day wash out period between a previous AD and going back on Parnate, because I was really in bad shape and it helped me get through the day.

However, I will say that I also get cravings and develop symptoms if I am completely free of the Vicodin for more than 18 hours or so. At least sometimes. So even at a small dose of one pill per day or less, there is an addiction component, which seems almost incredible to me, but its there. I sometimes take a half a Vicodin just to "relax" and like to tell myself that its like having a glass of wine after dinner...but I think its a bit more insidious.

My goal would be to stop using vicodin altogether and I am hoping the Lithium will do something with the Parnate. Right now I have just started with 300 mg lithium and will do my first lithium level in a few more days. Or that it can replace Parnate altogether, which has been the opinion of at least two experts in 'atypical depression' I guess that the Lithium can either augment the Parnate, making it more effective at a lower dose, or deal directly with my chemial imbalance, making Parnate unnecessary. Parnate was fine by itself for over 20 years, but I could take a higher dose without the insomnia, and sexual side effects, as well as the low blood pressure which I now get.

As someone said in a previous posting Oxycodene will help with almost anything. You have to be really careful with this drug as it is highly addictive. The trade offs may be worth it for some people, that is a very delicate issue.

I was addicted to oxycodone for five years and only got depressed when I stopped using it. I now realize I was using it to self-medicate for years. It's a great anti-anything. But it's highly addictive and not a good drug if you have a tendency to abuse things, as I do.
