Parnate + Anesthetic

Posted by AdamCanada2 on December 14, 2009, at 17:23:55

I go to dentist on wednesday and I have read how Anesthetics are not to be taken while on Parnate.

So what is the solution? Or do I have to hold out on getting a filling until in the future when I am not on Parnate? Do dentists have other things they can use besides an anesthetic?

Parnate + Dentist, is it safe??

Hello I am posting this again with new title because I need to know very quickly if this is safe or if I need to cancel. If I cancel too late I have to pay a fee and simply put money is not easy right now.

I have apointment to see dentist and they put that needle in my jaw so they can replace a filling.

Is this very risky? I don't want to die. I read how anasthetics should not be taken with Parnate. Is this the same thing? Anasthetic?

You have to make sure you tell your dentist that you are on a MAOI. Yes, you can get freezing..I'm sorry but I can't remember which ingredient in the freezing they can't use, I believe it's the one that prevents some bleeding, but they can give you the freezing without that ingredient. My dentist explained it all, but that was a few months ago when I was on Parnate. Sorry but my memory sucks as to what the ingredient was called.

Again, just make sure your dentist knows you're on Parnate.

Novocaine is fine with parnate, which is what they give you at the dentist. Even general anesthesia is fine with parnate. Just not demerol. I recently had surgery under anesthesia and I just told the anesthesiologist that I was on parnate, so not to use demerol.

The point, however, is that the standard novocaine that dentists use has demerol, and is dangerous.

So you do have to tell your dentist. It's best to be sure he understands and knows which anesthetic to use. Some doctors aren't aware of MAOIs and need to look it up-- or have their memories refreshed-- in order to use the right formula.

Does anyone have a detailed list of anesthetic contraindications with MAOIs?

Thanks.

Whatever they give you seems to be ok, as long as you ask for your novacaine without vasoconstrictors, or (same thing) without epinepherine. As someone said, no demerol, but I have never seen a dentist who used demerol. I have had more than 20 dental interventions with
Novacaine, but I always insist on the no vasoconstrictors. Knock on wood, i have never had a bad reaction.
