Elavil was the very first a-d I took! (this was before the SSRI's were introduced). I do not recall the dose I started out or titrated up to, but I DO vividly remember that at the beginning, for the first week or so only, Elavil was VERY sedating. I took it at bedtime and within minutes I was asleep and slept like a baby.
However, about a week or so after, its sedating effect wore off (which I had read and my pdoc at the time told me would probably happen), to the point where it did NOT sedate me AT ALL and I switched to taking it in the morning, remaining fully alert throughout the day!
I remained on Elavil for at least a year and the intial side effects (sedation, dry mouth, etc.) all wore off within 1-2 weeks.
So, my suggestion to you would be to give it at least 2 weeks and if the sedation and any other side effects you have do NOT wear off, contact your pdoc.
I wonder why your pdoc chose an older tricyclic such as Elavil for you in the first place, unless newer a-d's have not worked for you?
