In reply to Adderall made me quit smoking ,Why? please explain, posted by asian girl on March 16, 2004, at 21:59:42

This happens with any stimulant that works on the dopamine system. Adderall causes the release and blocks reuptake of DA, basically it causes a very high percentage of receptors in the dopaminergic system to become occupied, either by d-amphetamine or dopamine itself. It is more powerful in this regard than even nature's most potent stimulant, cocaine.

Since the addictive nature of nicotine relies on dopamine binding to these receptors, and nicotine does not have the ability to "knock" the ligand off of these occupied receptors, the pleasure/reward from smoking a cigarette is almost entirely abolished; dependant on the dosage of the stimulant of course.
