A few comments about buspar. When doctors say it may take a while for buspar to work they are probably right.
A benzo will calm an animal down immediately, but some other agents like buspar or AD's probably exert their antianxiety effect via neurogenesis. Resarchers noticed that 1a agonists calm animals down in about the timeframe that new neurons begin to establish connections.
So you're probably not going to notice an effect after 2 weeks of taking buspar. It might take a few months for the new neurons to make to make lasting connections about stradegies for dealing with stressors.
And no, it won't be the same type of anti-anxiety effect as a benzo, but it may be an arguably better way to approach anxiety disorders.
I would personally like to try a combination of a 1a agonist like buspar, and say a dopamine agonist. Some herbs do this. I think the anthocyannins in blueberries act as serotonin and dopamine agonists. Anthocyanninins are robustly neurotrophic too.
