In reply to MAOI USERS PLEASE READ!!!, posted by JaclinHyde on March 31, 2006, at 14:58:40
The doctor should have taken care to explain this. The pharmacist, too. It's basic knowledge necessary for anyone taking an MAOI.
Every Benadryl medication contains a clear warning that it must not be taken with an MAOI. The patient information sheets for Nardil and Parnate warn not to take cold, allergy, hay fever, and decongestant medications unless first cleared by a doctor.
When I started Nardil, my doctor sat me down and explained all the food issues and potential med interactions including OTC meds, and made me promise to follow the rules. When I picked up my scrip, the pharmacist took me aside and gave me the same lecture. Both of them told me to call the doc to get prior approval of any OTC meds for colds, allergies, etc.
