Electroconvulant therapy V.S stimulant therapy

the reason i'm asking this, stimulants usally give a new feeling of awareness that wasnt there before for me. But the shock therapy would activate centers that are not actvated but do you have to stop taking anti-depressant's to get the shock treatment? I know a doctor would tell everything if he referred me to ECT therpy.
Stimulants ... mmm are kind of a roller coaster in effects but I know exactly how they work and maybe why a side effect is caused.
I'm just curious has anyone here had ECT? before..
