My doctor said that 10mg is the maximum that has been used in drug trials and found to be safe. She also says that compounded melatonin is better than the over the counter stuff from the vitamin store which is apparently highly variable in efficacy.
My first night on melatonin was the best too. It was amazing! The way the tiredness came on, it was like being a kid again.
In my experience, melatonin works -- and works very well -- when I'm in the right state of mind for sleep. When I am anxious, restless and ruminating it is not as effective, I think because I consciously or subconsciously fight sleep.
Otherwise, very natural-feeling sleep commencing 2-3 hours after taking it.
NB: I've experimented with 3 - 6mg but didn't discern any improvement in sleep at higher doses.
