Hi Joe,
From my research on Remeron it has a long list of possible side effects - treatments I try to avoid except as a last resort. My last inpatient stay the head psychiatrist was very insistent that I go on Remeron, despite my concerns about its side effects and insisted that I try it for a couple nights. I tried the lowest dose and it was one of the worst meds I have ever tried. I felt like there was a hole where my brain should be. I couldn't form thoughts, I had difficulty communicating, I just sort of wandered around in a zombie haze. Aside from all of that, even on a weight gain basis alone I don't know what he was thinking in prescribing that for me, but it is very much a "doctor knows best" sort of hospital and he never did fully explain himself to me.
That said, I have very strong and often inexplicable reactions to psych meds that are atypical, so I am sure there are others who it has helped a great deal. I'm just not one of them. Wikipedia notes that there are two studies which found Imipramine superior to Remeron, and for once it does list the sources in case you want to check that out. Thought it might be worth mentioning.
Good luck with your med journey,
Cat
