At low doses (7.5mg and 15mg) remeron will act as a strong anti-histamine and will be useful as a sleeping agent, although drowsiness that stays well until the next day is common.
At doses 30mg and upwards remeron will increase noradrenaline and function quite differently, the sedation will be less pronounced and should go away after continuous use.
I've not heard about any SSRI augmentations, but remeron is famous for combining exceedingly well with SNRI meds like Effexor and Cymbalta. (It's also earned a reputation for being called "california rocket fuel" when taken together with a SNRI).
