Do you mean Valerian?
Smells like dirty socks?

Wasn't strong enough to make a difference in getting me to sleep, but once i finally did manage sleep, it kept me feeling 'drugged' all the _next_ day when i wanted to feel awake.

Yes, i was taking Wellbutrin.
This worked for me: Licorice Root Tea by Alvita/Twinlabs. Was amazing, and a blessing. It does something useful for the hp axis. Alert and balanced when i woke up in the morning, too. i learned about it here. There are more potent formulas in capsules in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but require a ND's RX.

Hope it helps,
Escher
