For me the damage of smoking lies in the guilt and shame. But it also makes may illness much more unmanageable.

Try quitting for 3 days just to see what it is like. Tell yourself you are free to start up again after the 3 days. Sort of a trial run to get over the fear of quitting. The first 24 hours are tough. You may not sleep the first night. After 3 days I feel like the physical part is over, but by the time I would quit I was down to 5 or less cigarettes a day. I've quit and failed so many times that when I finally quit for good (knock on wood) the actual quitting was the least of my worries.

Good luck and don't be too hard on yourself.
