I did over the rug on low setting, the carpet look different than a regular brush roll, the metal thing hits the carpet, the run and beats it all way down for dirt to come up, but it damages certain carpets, so I have nice rug in the living room we have had for years, many years, I started using the beater bar, on low position, the lowerst can go and noticed it made the carpet look different. Most vacuums today don't use metal beaters on them, too much money, usally for commercial line, they use 4 brush rolls, not metal beaters with brushes. That's older technology, hoover invented the beater bar in the 1920s and found how much more dirt, it beats down deep insie and makes it come up. It really depends, I have a hoover convertible with a beater bar, it looks different than the commercial line. I put it on low setting, and I should'nt of done it, it looks beaten and worn down. Stupid me.

Most vacuums today, never use beater bars, they use plastic brushrolls. They are better in grooming the carpet, but not lifting the dirt all the way deep in the carpet.
