Speaking from personal experience: when I was an active alcoholic, it masked my depression. When I became sober, I became depressed (and anxious, and panicked).
When I sought treatment for my depression, started therapy and medication, I would have TERRIBLE, EXCRUTIATING experiences if I drank once in a while. The depression would intensify, and the hangover was probably triple the pain and duration of my active alcoholic days.
So from a purely non-scientific POV I'd say that if you suffer from depression, are taking meds, and drink, then your depression will be worse. And I do think it's a reaction between what the meds are trying to do and what the alcohol undoes, and your poor brain is just writhing in agony between the two.
