You didn't become depressed overnight, I bet & it'll take a while for any AD to work. Even if the dose is intially the right amount, it still takes about three weeks **at least** for the needed changes in the brain to occur. AND that's saying the doctor's hit on the right level of dosing first time. It's like someone taking an antibiotic for an illness for a few days & saying they still feel sick. It needs time to work.

One psychiatrist conjectured that many people don't try a medication long enough at the correct dosage for them to find out if it would really work or not. More time & money is wasted by jumping around from one med to another without giving it a fair trial.

It's thought that perhaps the brain's neurons need a few weeks to make new connections between cells or to change the cellular structure to benefit from the drugs's action. 10 days is hardly a fair time to expect much from it. You should be patient for at least three weeks, then if necessary, your doctor can adjust the dosage upwards.

I was on 37.5 mg and then increase the dose to 75mg on my own ..my doctor is a GP and it was me that suggested effexor..I didn't expect to get worse though...

Worsening on ADs can sometimes indicate bipolar disorder. I agree with IsoM that it all takes time and you should wait (as hard as that can be), but you might want to consider seeing a psychiatrist instead of your GP to rule out things like bipolar disorder and just get better care all around.

I agree with Jon. I stayed on Effexor for over two weeks on the advice of my pdoc (and on his advice also upped my Klonopin), but it just kept getting worse and worse. It was clearly pushing me into an agitated hypomania and was not at all good for me.

Sometimes the start up symptoms are just start up symptoms and sometimes they are signs of a hypomanic episode. A pdoc really needs to be involved (although in my experience, it would be tough to find on that quickly).

It may get worse at first..as it did with me. Can you ask your doc for a benzo like clonazepam or lorazepam (or bromazepam if you are in Canada..it is a great alternative to clonazepam.)?

Let us know...and you really should get to your doctor asap.

Best wishes...

Robin, I read and was told that the average adult effective dose per day of Effexor XR is 150 mg.

I started at 37.5 for 2 weeks, then 75 for several weeks, then 112.5 which is what it took for me.

I think (my own non-dr. opinion) that 37.5 is a VERY LOW dose for moderate/severe depression.

Get with your dr asap!

But, hang in there! This is a great group. I'm feeling so so much better with Effexor! It has really straightened out my outlook--everything seems in better balance now. I don't spend time anymore agonizing over things over and over.

Pre-Placebo Placebo Effect

I haven't even taken the stuff yet.

But when my doc came out with two packs of the XR, I got a tingling sensation in my head and began to uncontrolably smile.

So if anyone uses the term pre-placebo placebo effect, please credit me... =)

P.S.- The tingling sensation in my head was the exact same thing I experienced while on Celexa... weird stuff.

Utopizen,

I think that is what used to be called a "contact high" from the sixties.....
