Electroconvulant therapy V.S stimulant therapy

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on March 14, 2010, at 18:26:41

the reason i'm asking this, stimulants usally give a new feeling of awareness that wasnt there before for me. But the shock therapy would activate centers that are not actvated but do you have to stop taking anti-depressant's to get the shock treatment? I know a doctor would tell everything if he referred me to ECT therpy.

Stimulants ... mmm are kind of a roller coaster in effects but I know exactly how they work and maybe why a side effect is caused.

I'm just curious has anyone here had ECT? before..

RJ I think quite a few posters have and didn't have the greatest results with it. They would have to post it though as this is second hand information. Phillipa

Are you saying that you have been referred for ECT?

no....I would have to talk to my doctor about it...and my mom would NEVER let me do it on her insurance, thinks it's a brutal treatment.

If I can ... ask a hospital if they offer it. But ... you know, it will happen in the future but thinking about it .... what happens after a year after you have shock treatment and depression comes back....you know.

thanks for posting

I would seriously not do ECT. Sure stimulant effects can be temporary but guess what - so are the effects of ECT.

I usually speak badly of ECT, due to my own experience with it. But ya know, if someone wants to try it, go for it. Your thinking and memory will likely be slower going forward. If that is an acceptable risk, go for it. The worst thing that will happen is you will lose a lot of memories of your life, names, places, events, etc. If that is an acceptable risk, go for it.

No one has a clue how ECT works. No one has a clue how ADs work either.

It should be known however that relapse rates after ECT, for those that responded, are extremely high and usually happen fairly soon...days, weeks, months. Ongoing maintenance meds are needed. So the med game is not over even if you have ECT.

And yes you can take ADs during ECT.

I don't think ECT will give more awareness. It is likely to make you very unaware. Blank thoughts/memories. I doubt it will help ADHD. I had ECTs and they were about the worst thing I ever did in psychiatry. I litteraly don't remember much from the time around and before ECT. They probably gave me around 50 of them. I awoke from one of the last ones thinking I had just been born, and not reconising what I was looking at it was a radio of some sort and I didn't know what it was.

I think you should try some thing else, unless you want to forget everything. I belive that all stimulants are bad for the heart. Maybe you could take some blood pressure meds with it? And or take a med like zyprexa to slow you down from the stims.

Why can't you go back to adderall?

I'm in the midst of my first ever ect series. After researching it extensively, and weight the pros and cons, i decided that it was worth a shot given the state is was in. I've only have 4 done thus far, and i have no horror stories or bad things to say about it. At very least, I believe (i could be wrong), that it is allowing my brain to accept medications that i previously could not tolerate or had such bad adverse reactions to.

I too was petrified about having them done and what the effects or outcome might be, but I have no complaints. I believe that I will finish out my series of 6 sessions, and then resume medications that seems to be working better or more receptive after the ECT.
