I'm sure this question has been asked before. I understand oxide is not too terribly bioavailable.
Is magnesium citrate any good ? That seems to be the only other form that local stores have.

I prefer magnesium taurate, magnesium orotate and magnesium malate, in that order. I can find magnesium malate and magnesium glycinate in my local health food store, but have to get magnesium taurate and mag orotate online.
I get mag taurate from Amazon, which actually comes from The Vitamin Shoppe, and mag orotate in bulk form from Beyond a Century.

Magnesium taurate is so expensive! At least at the shop I hit yesterday. I ended up getting citrate, I think. I went there looking specifically for taurate. I read that doses of 1250 mg. are optimal, something like that, and the stuff I found wouldn't even have lasted a month!I suppose I should check online, but that was something of a bummer.
So it works noticeably and well for you?

I have Magnesium Citrate at the moment. Best form I've tried so far in terms of a slight calming and no side effects namely in the nether regions hehe. I have never tried Taurate or Glycinate forms.

I average 3 capsules a day, so that's about $10 a month, which I consider a small price for sanity. :) Yes, it works well for me. I used to be suicidal and practically comatose with depression before I started taking magnesium.
I was also a nervous wreck, in part because I was getting too much calcium and again, not enough magnesium. I cut out calcium when I first started taking magnesium, which was really important, I believe.
What I like about mag taurate is that it seems you can take less of it for as good an effect as other forms. But I also have bulk magnesium orotate and magnesium malate which I put into capsules myself, which saves a lot of dinero, which I then spend on the more expensive mag taurate.
I've only tried mag citrate for a short time and noticed that I couldn't take much without getting diarrhea. I don't take magnesium glycinate so much any more, but preferred it for a long time. One reason I've moved away from it is because of the info on George Eby's site, who himself used to take mag glycinate but now recommends mag taurate.
To anyone who says magnesium has a detrimental effect for them, I would encourage trying another form as those chelating factors can make a difference, I believe.
1250 mg of magnesium per day is a pretty high dose, btw. Where did you hear that was optimal?
When I first started taking magnesium, I tried to take 800-1000 mg. I was taking magnesium glycinate at that time and at the highest dose, diarrhea was also a concern. Then later I was drinking water laced with powdered magnesium malate throughout the day, about 1000 mg a day total, but it started to feel like "too much". (But then I also eat magnesium rich foods like nuts regularly.)
Magnesium wasn't sedating to me then, like it is now. Now I have to take it at night, and taking more than 4-500 mg feels like a lot at one time. It took me a long time, well over a year, maybe even two years, I don't exactly remember, before magnesium became sedating.
My sister (who is not depressive) finds magnesium to be stimulating. She can't even take an Epsom salt bath without it keeping her awake! Just goes to show how different we can be from one another.

HiI take a homeopathic magnesium

and find it pretty calming. It is called Magnesium Phosphate in HOMEOPATHIC form. You can usually get it at a helath food store.If you go to the library or Barnes & Noble, browse through a copy of "Everbody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicines". it gives you a base understanding as to what homeopathics are. I have been using them for 20 years. Some with seemingly no effect, others with GREAT effect. Like everything, it depends. but it may be worth looking into.
