Trying the patch and my vitamin supplements. I do smoke less, but still can't kick the habit completely no matter what I try. Lately, I have become less of a chain smoker. With the patch, I went from smoking two packs down to one pack or less per day. With the supplements I have less mood swings during the day, and so I won't smoke as much. I started smoking at 29 when my bipolar started to get much worse. I didn't know what I was getting into. I'm 39 now and still smoking. If anybody has any secrets to quitting smoking, I would love to hear them. The patch is good for reducing chain smoking, but it never got me off the smokes completely. Any herbs (besides lobelia) that may have helped you with smoking?? Would love to hear any and all comments.

For me the damage of smoking lies in the guilt and shame. But it also makes may illness much more unmanageable.
Try quitting for 3 days just to see what it is like. Tell yourself you are free to start up again after the 3 days. Sort of a trial run to get over the fear of quitting. The first 24 hours are tough. You may not sleep the first night. After 3 days I feel like the physical part is over, but by the time I would quit I was down to 5 or less cigarettes a day. I've quit and failed so many times that when I finally quit for good (knock on wood) the actual quitting was the least of my worries.
Good luck and don't be too hard on yourself.

Thanks for your comments. I recently tried quitting, but I was having depression and low mood, so I went back to smoking. Looking into a possible herb formula to stop. The problem I see is that if I continue to wear the nicotine patch I'm just feeding the addiction. From what I've read, you have to completely get rid of any nicotine in your system in order to get better. Has anyone used an herbal formula to help them deal with the withdrawal of quitting smoking, and was it effective for you? Which herbs are the best in your opinion?

This immediately made me think of you, Lao Tzu. Until you quit, at least you know that you're reducing your cancer risk by taking B6. Methionine seems to help too. Can't remember if you take that or not.
(Sorry I don't have any quitting advice. Good luck, though! We're rooting for you.)

Thanks for your support. I really appreciate it. I have really felt the support from people on this website, and I'm very grateful for all of you out there in cyberspace. I don't feel so alone anymore. As far as the smoking, my family really supports me and cares that I do stop now before health issues start to emerge, probably in about ten years from now when I am around 50. I haven't really discovered a fool-proof method for successfully quitting. There is a lot of quackery out there for smoking cessation methods. I don't waste my money, but what I would like to see more of on the internet are personal experiences with smoking rather than mostly an abundance of advertisements or a slew of different sites that exhibit the exact same article word for word. It's amazing. Have you seen this before? As if they cut and paste it from different websites. I'm not impressed. I think it's going to be a real struggle to quit smoking, but somewhere along the line I have to ask myself, how much do I value my life? And what changes in my life will get me to finally quit for good? What will motivate me ? I am going to try different herbs to see which ones will ease the withdrawal? My mission is to invent an herbal formula that works for me because quite frankly, I don't trust the products out there work for everybody. I think you need an herbal formula tailored for the individual, which means experimenting on yourself or seeing a homeopathic doctor, which could be expensive, I think. I chose a terrible vice to involve myself in. Will have to find a way out eventually. Thanks again for your support.
