not sure where to post this and it sounds a little stupid, but can drinking alot of alcohol, socially not everyday, more bingey I guess but not....send you into a depression? I know it IS a depressant...but is it THAT powerful with mood AFTERwards? Or could medication/alcohol interactions do it?
thanks

> thanksSpeaking from personal experience: when I was an active alcoholic, it masked my depression. When I became sober, I became depressed (and anxious, and panicked).
When I sought treatment for my depression, started therapy and medication, I would have TERRIBLE, EXCRUTIATING experiences if I drank once in a while. The depression would intensify, and the hangover was probably triple the pain and duration of my active alcoholic days.
So from a purely non-scientific POV I'd say that if you suffer from depression, are taking meds, and drink, then your depression will be worse. And I do think it's a reaction between what the meds are trying to do and what the alcohol undoes, and your poor brain is just writhing in agony between the two.

Hey PC
Thanks! I have asked my friends about this minus the meds part and they think Im crazy so I so confused. But every once in awhile after I have been drinking I get a huge black cloud over my head for several days. Its really heavy and I am trying to figure out if there is a correlation or am I trying to grasp on to somehting to explain it away.
But I guess that makes sense that the two do different things and would mess you up a bit. But I am not a big drinker...part of the reason Im so confused about this.
Maybe the time intervals of no drinking and then full on drinking make it worse? But that is probably whats happening, I hope anyway.
btw it has taken me so long to finally figure out what POV was...geez duh rain lolPS- I think of you almost everyday now lol its so funny I keep hearing about partlycloudy on the news!! :-)

I'd second that account by PC. I used to mask depression and anxiety, mainly anxiety, with booze every evening for years. I finally became derailed when I was drinking too much. I don't think the alcohol being a CNS depressant gives you depression. I think the depression, anxiety and panic hits you when it clears. Personally I found that a period of happiness like I had hardly known waited for me about 5 days later if I stayed off the booze. I don't think continual drinking would be an improvement on binge drinking BTW

thats sort of what Ive noticed as well, it sits for ahile and then suddenly lifts a little.

oops I didnt mean to sound like that at all, I agree with you there! Just curious...what would you classify as binge drinking? I used that term but I dont know if that is actually what Im doing, Im curious now.

Hi. I believe that alcohol can definitely cause depression, almost regardless of how often one may be drinking. Alcohol damages the brain, nerves, and all other functions of the body. I am not saying don't ever drink, I am saying be moderate and reasonable. Binging (say drinking 2 or 3 times a week several drinks) is very unhealthy, leads to dehydration, blood sugar irregularities, and so much more. There are many vitamins you can take to replenish the nutrients lost via drinking, B-Vitamins especially, however drinking water also will help flush the toxins faster from the body. Remember, it only takes 1 to 2 at the most (drinks) to be intoxicated to not drive or end up with a DWI/DUI for women and 2 to 3 for men. Good luck! Take those B's!

Thanks I always forget that stuff, I know to take B vitamins before and after drinking but I never remember too.

I would never drive if I had more than one drink.
Thanks for your repsonse and Welcome!

in my opinion, alcohol can most definitely cause depression. my mood has greatly improved due to my meds, but when I have a few drinks or get drink, its like a ton of bricks hits me. Im back to sever depression for a couple days, and then it lifts. Im 24 now and drink around 3 times a week from 16-23, so getting used to not being able to drink or have a good time with alcohol is very difficult to deal with.

It's a decision that you make for yourself. I had one inept T who suggested that eventually I might be able to drink in safety. Sorry, tried that one about a thousand times, no luck. Just makes you feel like more like a loser. But I'm not, I'm just an alcoholic. There is no such thing as me being able to drink in safety. Moderation? Hah! It's a form of self torture.
