everyday is another wait

Posted by utopizen on June 30, 2003, at 16:23:06

My GP told me Friday he would call me back with a list of referrals of p-docs in the state I'm interning in right now (this is an out-of-state p-doc, so he'll know ones nearby).

This is necessary because A) my GP is overwhelmed to give me anything beyond Ambien (all I wanted was Ambien and Provigil). and B) my out-of-state p-doc has not answered my phone calls in a week and a half. He just mails in scripts.

Sorry for whining, but isn't it illegal or something not to return messages when you tell your doctor on the message to get back to you, that you visited the ER for chronic insomnia lasting 2 nights of no sleep, that the ER doc ordered you to follow-up with him, etc., etc.??

This is a p-doc who practcies psychopharma at one of the best med school teaching hospitals in the nation. I can't believe how careless he's been, just not returning any of my messages. I've been nice and everything, he's ignoring me.

I would let your doc know on your next message that you have documented the time and date of your messages and his/her lack of responses to you and that you are going to be contacting the medical board so that they can take note of his/her negligence of your medical care. You are more important than this!!! For sure! Love to ya!

I'm doing one better if he doesn't call back tomorrow-- his office is at a major city teaching hospital. I'm talking to the patient ombusdman and reporting it to the board as well.

Odd, considering the state board elected to have *this* doc evaluate another psychiatrist after his mental status was called into question when he left threatening messages to insurance companies...

You are on the right track! It is my very firm belief that no doctor, nurse, or psych of any sort should be allowed to practice if his or her social skills are not extraordinary. Standards should be set very high for those who work with people and upheld (all social positions in fact -- including my own). Get the h*ll out of the field if you can't work with people. I'm not just talking about not returning a phone call. I'm talking about those who are just plain rude and obnoxious and work in social positions. There is far too much rudeness and mistreatment in this world. Good job standing up for yourself.

Oh great. Called today at 7:50 AM, and doc's voicemail said "I'll be out until the 14th, if you need a refill, call this doc at..."

I need Provigil or I will have to return home, dump my internship, everything. I feel painfully tired everyday, everyday is like hell. A GP I saw Friday who promised to get back to me with a list of p-doc names in the area still hasn't, and I'm losing hope.

What are my options now? Go to the ER like I did a week ago after not sleeping for two days, only this time explain to them how I am sleeping on the Ambien they gave me, getting 8-9 hours, and still am tired? As if they'll prescribe me Provigil? It doesn't seem realistic, I know I'd be sent home with nothing, or a number for a referral that I can get an appt. with by the time I'm done with my internship anyway.

I need Provigil. Really badly. I don't know where to turn now, I really don't.

Try to call that other doc and explain the situation and see if he/she will help you. This sounds horrible. If it gets to bad, to the point of any suicidal ideations, please call a crisis number.........please. This will pass, it always does. It just doesn't seem like it. I have many days like this myself. They suck! The answer is somewhere. You just have to power through till you get there hun. Hang in there!!!!

I'm sure you've already thought of this, but could the GP you saw give you some Provigil? It's a pretty loosely-controlled med, and you're accustomed to taking it, so it's not exactly a high-risk situation for you, him or her.

If you were to call the GP's office and explain that you're in a bad situation, having been taken off a med you need, due to a mixup (and mention that you haven't received the list of pdocs they promised), just maybe you could get a prescription. Or, if you're lucky, they might even have samples -- there are lots around.

It's a long shot, but worth a try. I once (through sheer persistence/insistence) persuaded a stand-in GP who was clearly benzophobic to prescribe Xanax when I really needed it and my regular doctor was on vacation.
