A few hours later I became suddenly quite ill. We all thought it was food poisoning and that the bagged pre-washed lettuce was the culprit.

Just to add my 2 cents here, I used to get sick (and throw-up) from the salmon that came from our local supermarket. My roommate used to buy it all the time and never got sick from it. I was very careful in how I handled it and cooked it so I knew it wasn't due to anything I did. I thought I might be developing an allergy as well. However, I was later able to eat it from most restaurants without a problem. (Only once did I get sick from salmon at a restaurant and I have ordered it often enough.) Now I buy it frozen from Trader Joe's occassionally and haven't had a problem but I've always wondered why I got sick previously. So anyway you are not alone in experiencing this. Maybe Larry can add some clarity here.
