My experience of hair loss being a male is that it's almost impossible for a male to recover hair as a result of male pattern baldness. However it's accepted in society that men lose their hair. The figure is something like 80% of males lose their hair. For women it is tougher as the % of them losing their hair is far lower.

The mechanism for hair loss is complex in men is complex it's thought to be the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the enzyme 5 alpha reductase converts testosterone to DHT and drugs such as Proscar and Dutasteride inhibit this conversion. Proscar only inhibitis type one 5 alpha reductase but dutasteride inhibits both type 1 and ii.

The above drugs are still only marginally effective against hair loss, regrowth is never stunning. The reason that people lose their hair in the same pattern is due to the genetic susceptibility of the hair follicles. In men the hair around the sides and back of the head are immune to the mechanism of hair for want of a better word. The body starts an immune response against the hair follicles gradually destroying them, and making them finer until they can't be seen by the naked eye. On closer inspection you will see that the hair is still there just not cosmetically visible.

I believe the person that had the best results with natural treatment was a chinese fella called Waseda.

Here was his regimen >

Vitaminox---$16 (1/4 of 280ml including postage)
GSS(Growing Shot S)---$40
Spironolactone (18/100, No Brand from NewZealand)---$3.40
GSE(Grape Seed Extract from China, 3.5g)---$1.20
Alcohol (total 250ml)---$4.00
Souhakuhi (35g per month)---$1.50
Licorice root(30-40g)---$1.00
Shikon(15g)---$1.00
Bayberry(35g per month)---$1.50
Perilla leaf(15-20g)---$0.80
Zinc Oxide Cream(Restamin Kowa Cream)---$6.16
Ascorbic Acid powder---$0.50
Bottled Lemon Extract---$2.00
----------------------------------------------
Total -----$79.06

The old posts can still be found by searching www.deja.com for waseda. All the relevant posts are to be found in the newsgroup alt.baldspot (unfortunately killed off by a snakeoil salesman called Ernie, who started a flamewar there.)

The best thing I can recommend for anyone losing their hair is to research the formula of chinese herbs that Waseda used and also the formulas by Dr. Peter H. Proctor, PhD, MD who knows as much as any scientist on the subject of hair loss. Peter Proctor's hair loss formulas are based on naturally occurring compounds, so I would still regard them as alternative, they certainly don't act like the powerful drugs I mentioned earlier. Here is his site > http://www.drproctor.com/ (check out the hair FAQ on his site)

I think for a woman to recover her hair then Dr Proctor's formulas are of more benefit. It's usually easier for a female to recover her hair than a male.

I remain bald to this day and just closely shave my head, it's the easiest option for a male. The road to regrowth for a male is a frustation and vain attempt in both meanings of the word. I do understand emotionally what it's like to lose your hair, from the age of 18 mine started to fall and that was one of the worst things emotionally I had to go thorugh. On some days I still wish I had hair, but at the age of nearly 36 now I have certainly learnt to live with it. Hair loss is about how other people see you, if you can think it's their problem not yours then you are half way to recovering from any negative emotions hair loss might instill in your psyche.
