Tealady is so right -
I do follow a low-carb diet and if you don't mind eating meat, pork is a great source of thiamin - the best out of the meat world.
I have read that thiamin can be made in the gut, but I would think that only the best digestion /unharmed bacterial flora would be able to do this, another reason to supplement.
One orthomolecular doctor recommends opening a bottle of any particular vitamin and smelling it - if it smells good to you or has no smell he thinks you need it. If it smells bad then you don't need that one at that time.
Not sure how true this is, but I did sniff my B1 tablets when I first got them and ADORED the smell - although my hubby thought they smelt disgusting.
After supplementing for a couple of months, the smell is not so appealing to me, but it doesn't smell bad either.
So maybe there is some truth in that theory.
