Larry---need your input--really sick

Posted by MidnightBlue on April 18, 2005, at 14:41:21

I had been taking 2-3 capsules of Omegabrite a day even if I ate salmon that day for about a month. Last Monday after a big salad for lunch which included salmon I took 1 capsule. A few hours later I became suddenly quite ill. We all thought it was food poisoning and that the bagged pre-washed lettuce was the culprit.

I slowly got better until very late last night when after a dinner of salmon (fresh), rice, and broccoli and two Omegabrite capsules I became ill again.

I have never had a problem eating salmon and I don't think it was bad fish. I am the only one getting sick--I was the only one to eat that particular bagged lettuce.

I can't eat anything right now. Do you think it is food poisioning, the Omegabrite, or a new food allergy?

I don't think there is anything wrong with the Omegabrite. It is a good product. Maybe my reaction to it? But still that seems strange.

Just to add my 2 cents here, I used to get sick (and throw-up) from the salmon that came from our local supermarket. My roommate used to buy it all the time and never got sick from it. I was very careful in how I handled it and cooked it so I knew it wasn't due to anything I did. I thought I might be developing an allergy as well. However, I was later able to eat it from most restaurants without a problem. (Only once did I get sick from salmon at a restaurant and I have ordered it often enough.) Now I buy it frozen from Trader Joe's occassionally and haven't had a problem but I've always wondered why I got sick previously.

So anyway you are not alone in experiencing this. Maybe Larry can add some clarity here.

I can't think of a mechanism, other that one you have now control over.....your primitive brain, the brain stem, makes observations about what makes us sick. It's not a precise thing, but if you got terribly sick after a particular meal, you can become nauseous every time you might face that food again. It happens. I can't eat bananas. I choked on one when I was an infant. The smell of a fresh banana makes me instantly nauseous. How likely this is, as an explanation, only you can say.

The other thing is to do an elimination and rechallenge. Stop all salmon and fish oil products, for two weeks. Then try them each, but separately. See how you feel.

BTW, I am majorly sensitive to bagged lettuce. They do something to it, that makes it most gnarly on my innards.

I can't see an obvious reason for your reaction to the second meal, unless you still weren't over an earlier bout of food-borne illness.

It is very possible I may still not be over the first illness. I was better but still dizzy, etc. I lost 10 lb or more in a week and never fully got my appetite back. My white count was up some and they re-did that test on Saturday. I don't have the results yet.

At least I didn't throw up the second time around (yet), just severe diarrhea. I'm trying to eat very light but I've got to come up with something besides pedialite, jello and chicken noodle soup.

I can eliminate all fish and supplements for two weeks.

If you still have those symptoms, I'd almost certainly go with food poisoning. There are different kinds, and some with persistent symptoms. Some of the noxious forms of E. coli, for example.

I don't think it's the fish, at all. It was an accidental exposure to something that was contaminated with little nasty critters.

I'd forget about the elimination diet concept altogether. Did the doctors say you could take an antispasmodic, e.g. Lomotil or Imodium? Peptobismol can help settle things down, too.

Yeah, I'm on some Imodium today. Last week it actually stopped by itself. But after about 30 times and no food it didn't really have an option! I'm afraid they are doing to put me on an antibiotic. I haven't been on one for 8 years and my GERD doesn't respond very well to them.

I didn't really think it was the fish--just maybe the overload of omega between the fish and the supplements on a badly traumatized colon. I had a little chicken and rice tonight. I've got to eat something! I'm hoping they will call with the second blood test results tomorrow and then I can tell them I'm not well yet!

Another thing to think about

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this to you, but farm raised salmon can make some people very ill. Something about overcrowded conditions and swimming in their own waste. yuck.

I only buy wild salmon now, as my husband get sick from the farm raised stuff. Just something to think about.

Larry,

I'm a bit better. Thanks for asking. I had a relapse exactly a week ago. I'm back up to two OmegaBrite fish oils a day. Still not back on EPO. I'm a bit scared to go to three fish oils yet. I must have a very sensitive system, because only two was causing some bloating, etc. I've eaten catfish twice, but I haven't gotten up the nerve to eat my beloved salmon again!

I went to the doc Wed. and my blood pressue is really up. He wants me to start taking Avapro. I am NOT eager to do that. And he wants to start me on an AD in a couple of weeks. I am hoping 3 a day of the fish oil will brighten my mood again. It seemed to be helping! I have been reading about 5-htp and might ask him about that instead of an AD. I am still using Ambien sometimes to help me sleep.

Saw your troubles about your nerve pain on the other board. Hang in there! I have major back problems and will run out of Bextra soon and we will have to find a substitute for that. I'm determined not to take narcotics or anticonvulsants if at all possible.

Thanks for all your help,
MidnightBlue
